Nigeria EV Duty Drops to 0% July 2026: The Real Cost Breakdown for Importers

Everyone in Lagos is shouting about 0% duty. Yes, Nigeria’s Finance Minister Wale Edun signed the 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures (April 1), and starting July 1, 2026, battery EVs officially pay zero import duty.

But don’t pop the champagne yet. If you think “zero duty” means free cars, Apapa Port will humble you real quick.

The Hidden Costs (That Still Exist)

Even with 0% duty, you still pay:

1. NAC Levy (~15%): The National Automotive Council levy doesn't care about duty; it's still charged on the vehicle value.

2. SONCAP: You must have the Product Certificate (PC) before the ship leaves China, and the Shipment Certificate (SC) before arrival. Miss this, and your container sits.

3. Port Charges: Terminal handling, customs processing, and agent fees. These are fixed costs.

Real-World Math (BYD Song Plus Example)

Take BYD Song Plus as an example, let’s say your FOB price is $22,000.

The Truth: The 0% duty saves you about $1,100 compared to the old 5% rate. But if your SONCAP is wrong and the car sits for 20 days, you lose that entire saving to demurrage.

90-Day Transition Warning

We are currently in the 90-day transition window (started April 1). If you opened your Form M before April 1, you might still clear under old rates. If not, July 1st is the hard cutoff. Double-check your HS codes now—make sure they specify "Pure EV" and not a generic gasoline code.
